    Pink Grapefruit and Pomegranate Soda

Pink grapefruit and pomegranate comprise the main ingredients in this gorgeously hued soda, and yet you might have a hard time picking out either flavor. What it does taste like is the holidays: merry, bright, a little spiced and very festive. To make the syrup for this seasonal fruit soda, you simply simmer grapefruit and [...]

    Asian Pear Sparkler

With several of my family members and friends allergic to alcohol, I’m looking at the holidays as a time to invent seasonal, booze-free drinks that still feel special. This Asian pear sparkler is smooth and refreshing with an enticing undercurrent of warm autumn flavors. I love making drinks with seasonal fruit, simmering the juice with [...]

    Rowan Berries

While traveling through Minnesota the past couple of weeks, I’ve spotted hundreds, perhaps thousands, of these brilliant red berry clusters in yards and parks. Of course, my first thought was, “Are they edible?!” As it turns out, yes … but you probably don’t want to plop a raw berry in your mouth. I discovered that [...]

    Salal Berries

I spent last week hiking along rivers and coastal cliffs of Oregon, stopping along the way to feast on wild blackberries, thimbleberries, huckleberries, and one berry that I’d never heard of before – the salal. On the first day of hiking, I encountered these bluish-black berries growing high above a windswept beach and, suspecting that [...]

    Ginger Switchel

I’ve gone a bit mad for vinegar drinks this summer, and making homemade shrubs led me to another old-fashioned refresher: the switchel. Dating back to the early American colonies and possibly the Caribbean before that, this vinegar and ginger drink became known as haymaker’s punch in the 19th century, when it was served to quench [...]

Welcome to Sustainable Foodworks

Emily HoHello! My name is Emily Ho and I’m a good-food crafter, writer, teacher, and consultant. I am also an avid hiker and wild food forager.

I believe in the importance of cooking and eating mindfully in order to cultivate our connections to the earth and to each other. There is great joy and power in understanding where our food comes from, exploring the world with all our senses, and sharing nourishment with others – generation to generation, neighbor to neighbor, hand to hand.

In 2012 I am working on:
• writing a cookbook on seasonal, non-alcoholic beverages
• teaching people how to make their own sodas and syrups
• deepening my knowledge of foraging and wildcrafting
• collecting oral histories of food preservation

I look forward to sharing and connecting with you!
